A Day in The Life of an Employment Trainee!

After finishing my 5 years at university, I am now undertaking my first seat of my traineeship within BTOs Employment Team! I have worked with BTO for a number of years doing reception and administration support work, and I can’t believe the time has finally come to sign off my emails as ‘Trainee Solicitor’!

After only a few weeks, I can see that employment law is an energetic field that works with the necessary legislation which controls work-related issues, whilst also dealing with the very human interactions that unfold within the workplace.

A typical day for me starts with sorting through my emails to see what needs prioritised, this is often accompanied by a nice hot cup of coffee! We often have strict deadlines we need to adhere to, so it is crucial to stay on top of things and note key dates.  It is not uncommon to see work come in which requires a very fast turnaround, and thankfully I have a strong (and very patient) team around me that can assist me with this.

Our work ranges from a variety of different sectors with providing advice to both employees and employers. We could see allegations of harassment, conflicts between employees, disputes over contract terms, and employers seeking advice on policies or grievance and disciplinary procedures. We must always ensure that the client’s best interests are protected while maintaining a positive workplace environment.

Employment law is often subject to regular updates and changes so staying up to date is crucial. Whether it is a change in legislation or a groundbreaking tribunal case that may affect future cases. I thoroughly enjoy this aspect of employment law- it keeps me on my toes!

It is typical for us to have regular client meetings. They can range from advising just one individual, to a board of employers. These meetings often require empathy and good communication skills and obviously first-class legal knowledge with practical input as no two cases are the same and often cases can involve a web of complicated issues or facts.

When I am not involved in client work, I am engaging in business development and networking opportunities. This can vary from meeting with contacts and clients, to organising events and seminars for our clients, contacts and colleagues. I enjoy interacting with our key clients and contacts and working side by side with our ever growing employment team and seeing the impact of our advice when clients secure  the result or outcome they were looking for.

In this field of law, it’s clear that learning never really ends. Keeping skills razer-sharp amongst new emerging trends is essential.  Bring on week 4!
